FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What does therapy look like?

My mission is to provide inclusive, holistic, up-to-date, and personalized care. You know yourself better than anyone else. It is not my role to tell you how to live your life or to simply provide advice. My role is to be a partner walking alongside you and helping you untangle the complicated and unhealthy systems in your life. My goal is to listen, challenge, and empower you.

What can I expect during our first few appointments?

The first 1-3 appointments are an intake/consult process aimed at getting a full history to best understand your needs and goals. To streamline this process, it is important to complete all paperwork ahead of time so I can best be prepared for our appointment. Of course your whole life will take much longer to fully comprehend. However, I aim to find a starting place where we can develop treatment goals and have a direction for us to go.

What does a “good fit” mean?

Research shows that the main factor in positive outcomes in counseling is the therapeutic alliance. Interventions are most effective in a trusting relationship and in the right setting. Sometimes, therapist and client are not a good fit for different reasons (i.e. specialty, level of care needed). This is your space and time. You deserve to have a therapist who fits you and your needs. If we feel I cannot provide the treatment you need, I will provide referrals.

How long do I have to attend therapy?

Short answer, it depends. Most symptoms can have significant reduction within 8-12 visits. Some much sooner and some much later. It depends on the severity of your symptoms and your goals. We will discuss timeline expectations and continue to re-assess your needs.

I’m looking for a welcoming and inclusive therapist. Is that you?

Yes! I am affirming to different genders, sexual orientations, racial backgrounds, religious affiliations, and political affiliations. I believe in creating a judgment-free zone where you feel safe to explore who you are.

Is what I say truly confidential?

Absolutely. It’s like a sacred oath we take and the pillar of what makes counseling work. However, there are a few exceptions such as danger to self or others or abuse of protected individuals.

Are appointments in-person or virtual?

Both! I provide teletherapy using a secure link. This helps reduce barriers, such as location and transportation. Please note, I am only licensed in Michigan. Therefore, if you are located or travelling outside of Michigan, we cannot see each other during that time. I also provide in-person therapy located in Traverse City.
